The usual scenario first thing...
up early and to work...
Breakfast around 9...
Back to the machines...
Today's CD Box, No 86, Butterworth - Col Legno...
Took the final CD from the box...
...a smapler of the Col Legno label...
A staple for the weird and wonderful...
This one though, not quite as off piste as it might be, pieces by the reasonably well known quintet of Adams, Penderecki, Schnittke, Ligeti and Carter, with Mossolov thrown in...
Off out at 9:30...
We were visiting Anne's mum but I decided to get some walking in on the way, utilising the walk for some listening - Genesis' "Nursery Cryme" and "Foxtrot", the 2007 mixes...
Down the big hill...
...along to...
...the Zoo...
...past the top of Anne's mum's old road...
...past the bottom of Jane and Bob's...
...and the strange hotel...
...taking the high road by the church...
...to Roseburn...
...where Anne arrived just as I started the incline to the home...
In...
And along to the cafe, where the lure of cake was more interesting than having your picture taken...
Coffee cake...
Superb - made by the kitchen staff...
My piece must have been the smallest...
Leaving Mary to her keep fit class, we drove out to to Hopetoun Garden Centre (Dougal's)...
Quirky...
Me being in a garden centre is like Anne being in a record shop...
Reasonable views though...
Soon, choices were made...
..and your correspondent was happy to carty them back to the car...
A drive to nearby Linlithgow for lunch...
A costless spot found for the car...
..and a walk through the town...
Decided on the Four Marys for lunch...
...which proved to be, yes, you've guessed it, tasty...
A visit to Prog Rock Willie's local record shop, Low Port but nothing found...
In the Chest Heart & Stroke shop, this for £1...
Does what it says on the tin, though it might be argued that quite a few of the acts involved are not "one hit wonders" - depends on the definition I suppose...
Home and listening...
The new TQ arrived...
...and Keith & Maureen sent pics from Bilbao, including paintings in the Guggenheim by Klein, Basquiat and Twombly...
Jane was surprised I ID'd them so easily but it's what I do - plus, I have books...
Much of the rest of the day was taken up with TV, including "Shrill" and an excellent version of "God Only Knows" and more music listening...
Alice Cooper has a new guitarist to replace Nita Strauss, who is taking leave to have a baby...
22 year old Anna Cara, from England...
Dream job!
Really enjoyed this from Rick Beato re a 1973 comp of music released 1967-73, and the quality of its contents - challenging people to produce a similar compilation for 2022-2026 and wondering if as many people in 2079 would still know those tracks as those who, 53 years after its release recognise the majority of the 1973 4LP set...
My response...
The problem with comparing then to now (and I prefer then, having been 14 in 1973) is, back in 1973, "almost everybody" was exposed to exactly the same music...
The number of releases was comparatively sparse...
People's tastes were driven by radio...
There were gatekeepers (such as Warners) who limited what made it out into the world...
There is some absolutely brilliant music being released almost every day now and it's relatively easy to find stuff which is easily on a par with 1967-1973...
It's just that, music now has little chance of ever becoming as popular as those tracks did then...
The chances of gaining massive traction, as the majority of those tracks did over the six year period in question, are very low - because now, "almost nobody" is exposed to exactly the same music...
Listening habits have changed due to the massive availability of all types of music...
The possibility of mass consensus is gone...
The received wisdom has yet to take hold...
For me, there's a requirement for up to ten years, possibly more, for any new music to eventually be established as "classic"...
Sadly, I won't be here in 2079 to see if Rick is correct but it may well be that it no longer matters, as everyone will have collated their very own favourites from the now millions of tracks being released every year...
And, yes, of course I digitally compiled a copy of the set...
Lights out...
Highlight of the Day: Out and about...
