DIARY

The diary is up to date, with daily entries from Sunday 5 March 2005 through to Friday 18 July 2025...
(Scroll down for the latest entries)

Between those dates, 136 days are "picture only", across 5 periods in 3 of the 21 years:-

2016 (3 Days): 15-17 October
2022 (85 Days): 18 April - 10 May (23); 6 July - 5 September (62)
2023 (48 Days) : 1 - 15 October (15); 18 October - 19 November (33)

I've recently updated missing days in September 2023.  It is always the intention to update "picture only" days with the relevant text but doing so is, of course, subject to opportunity (and, indeed, memory!)

Crispycat Recordings released the first 25 Cloudland Blue Quartet albums (recorded between 1996 and 2012) to Bandcamp in 2013.

A further 8 LPs were released between 2013 and 2019.

Then, with the advent of lockdown, David spent much more time on new Cloudland Blue Quartet works, with the result that, since May 2020, new music has been released almost every month, with almost 80 further new releases having been issued in the last five years.

The current 14 strong pipeline (see below) will take matters to April 2026, pushing the total Cloudland Blue Quartet releases available on Bandcamp to well beyond 100.

Meanwhile, retrospective releases by David's groups Creek, Crazy Wisdom and Capital Models have also been being issued by Crispycat Recordings and these are set to continue, with around 50 planned over the next 18 months or so...

In 2025, Crazy Wisdom and Capital Models have also released new recordings...

LATEST CBQ RELEASE

As always from Crispycat Recordings, entirely Free to Stream or Name Your Price (including zero) to Download

"Variations on Fripp & Eno's "No Pussyfooting"" is a reimagining of what is, for Cloudland Blue Quartet, a seminal release and one which spurred him on to what is now approaching 50 years of music making

The fifth in a series of variations on the music of Brian Eno, it follows on from his 2021 takes on "Music For Airports" and "Thursday Afternoon" and his 2025 reworkings of "Discreet Music" and "On Land" and is a double LP, comprising reworkings of the two pieces from the original LP plus the two stand alone "Disquietmusik" guitar solos, recorded for the project.

The download bundle includes over 7hrs 10 mins of bonuses, the equivalent of an extra 10 LPs of music, comprising the "Backwards", the "16 RPM" and the "16 RPM Backwards" mixes of the variations and of the guitar solos which feature on this reworking of the 1973 LP

PODCASTS
David produces a weekly podcast on Mixcloud, reflecting his esoteric taste in music and encouraging listeners to broaden their musical horizons.

Since 2014, over 720 editions of the "Cloudland Blue Eclectic Selection" have been recorded.  Unfortunately, only the most recent 10 are able to be made available on the Mixcloud platform.

Sometimes you can't resist a binge...

Playlist

Up at 6:20...

The back room awaited...

New Music Friday (see below)...

...then, the first few hours of the day were spent creating a mock up of what the proposed CBQ/Higham LP might sound like once Joe records some sax solos to be input to proceedings...

Anne to Zumba - post the Higham project, I enjoyed 3 episodes of "Travelers"...

Anne home for lunch and a "Ballard" - we now had four of the ten left...

This afternoon, some listening and, generally, time wasting...

With Anne off to see her mum, another two "Travelers" enjoyed...

Downloaded actor Mackenzie Porter's 3 albums...

Not bad...

She was a singer pre "Travelers" - and remains one afterwards...

For #CDFriday, I chose Rheostatics this week...

31 years next month since I was given this  by Dave Bidini...

...interrupted by a tasty tea...

...and a visit from Fang...

The final four "Ballard"s were binged...

Good outcome and cliffhanger for Season 2...

Back to the Rheos, upstairs, while reading up about them in my big book of Canadian music from 1985-1995...

Bed at midnight...

Highlight of the Day : Ballard binge...

Everyone loves a list, part 684...

Playlist

Up just before 6 - tonight's proposed rehearsal cancelled due to a chest infection from drummer Johnny...

Stuff awaited...

Started the day with John Coltrane's "Ascension" (Edition II - Take 1) (Mono) (Side 1) - post some posts yesterday on the piece....

It would have been his birthday today...

Luckily, I was in the correct mood, so it was fantastic...

I have a few versions/editions from which to choose...

Worked out that I have earned around 60 times as much on Bandcamp as my streams there would have done on Spotify - in reality I'd earn zero from the latter as to earn, any track must achieve at least1,000 streams in a 12 month period...

Virtually impossible for around 80-90% of the music on the platform...

The simple answer as to how artists could be paid more from streaming services is...  Subscribers need to pay more!  That's it... But what are the chances that Ek won't just keep that extra revenue?  Hmmm...

And so, if your music's on Spotify, you should remove it. I'm pretty sure you earn zero from it in any case and it's only really on there so you can say "yes, I AM indeed on Spotify" to your family & friends, who use that service to access music and who have never heard of Bandcamp...

Anyway, breakfast - mushrooms and an egg, with toast....

Nice...

Some stupidly complex work trying to create instrumental versions of a track from Tangerine Dream's "Cyclone" which the stupidly had singing on...

Some measure of success but, yes, this is how I waste my time...

Went into the 2nd season of "Swedish Dicks" only to find that Prime wanted £Q15 to watch it - on top of the £9 a month we already pay (mind you, see above re Spotify - ironic)....

They can whistle...

At 12, along to Stockbridge with Anne...

We parked on the roof of Waitrose...

...and availed ourselves of some lunchtime goodies there, eaten along the road on a bench - here, my hot smoked salmon and rice salad - very tasty indeed...

To the Shelter shop, while Anne perused shops she likes...

Various CDs and a big book taken, while Anne bought a sister Jane turning 60 related DVD...

Home to the garden...

...and next door's being looked after 83 year old (apparently) tortoise...

In...

I foolishly didn't check the CDs - one (unpictured disc of Mexican Baroque music) was empty...

The rest of the haul...

Played the first disc of this box, only to find the third disc had been replaced with the best of Cat Stevens...

Back to the roof of Waitrose...

Back to Shelter and two replacements granted - and some nice biscuits bought re my parking on Waitrose's roof...

The replacements...

...enjoyed Biber upstairs on the wee CD, while leafing through the book...

Steak pie for tea - should really have taken the pic before I mixed it all up like a child...

This evening, the other three new CDs listened to, while I made a list of all the chamber pieces in the new second hand book (published in2007 so nothing beyond that included)...

132 of the 1,0001 works were deemed "chamber", of which 37 were my favourite type of classical music - string quartets...

Here, the pieces created in my lifetime...

Maybe one day I'll do something with the list...

Maybe...

England Ladies were playing Sweden's ladies tonight and struggled back to 20-2 with two late stupidly given away goals...

There then followed dreadful extra time and, then, quite frankly, the worst penalty shoot out I've ever seen - of course England scraped through (3-2 after around 8 penalties each) but, really, on the basis of the shoot out, both teams should have been sent packing...

Highlight of the Day: New old classical music book...
