A fairly uneventful day...

No new purchases, though I did receive, from a colleague, a downloaded burn of the Duffy album “Rockferry” – a current hit amongst the general public at present I gather...

The album is good, though relies heavily on pastiche of a mid-sixties sound reminiscent of the palette which accompanied the likes of Dusty Springfield or Dionne Warwick and the latter’s interpretations of Bacharach & David compositions...

There is no doubting though, that Duffy’s recent single, “Mercy” is an absolute classic...

Spent much of the evening watching stuff on Youtube, including the latest uploads from my old chum Peri Urban, and then The Blue Nile which, somehow, led me to the great comedian, Eddie Izzard...

Back downstairs, I was perusing the Radio Times whilst listening to more Blue Nile when I noted, at 11:25pm, that a concert by The Bad Plus was due to be broadcast in a programme commencing at 11:30 pm...

Using the Freeview Box to access Radio Three in all its digital glory, I set the video to record, with a view to transferring to mini-disc, then the PC and, finally, to a CD in the fullness of time...

A great one hour broadcast followed including 10 minutes of interview with the band...

Much of the material they played differed from the set I saw them play just three days earlier in Glasgow...

Whilst listening, I read a very interesting essay on “Jazz Since 1960” by Eric Hobsbawm (from this book), in which he lamented the fact that, despite the Avant Garde movements of the late 60s and early 70s, there is a real chance that jazz will become fossilised in the same way in which classical music has....

Some good points were made but I think bands like The Bad Plus point to an alternate future for the genre...

A few set-box glitches will need to be edited out (I have a feeling Anne’s Setanta Card has a lot to answer for – including the long-running annoying inability to view anything on BBC Four) – but this should make a good addition to my Bad Plus collection...

Off to bed around 1:15....

Highlight of the Day : A chance encounter with The Bad Plus
