UK – The Best of UK (CD-R)

A lovely day commenced with me asking for, and being promised, a room change...

We had breakfast at a little place just along the road from the hotel...

...after which we walked up the hill to the Pantheon...

...burial place of the great and the good of the French Nation...

...then past the perimeter fence of the Luxembourg Gardens - with its exhibition of world photography...

...and on into the peaceful gardens...

....where we spotted in a newspaper the unexpected result from last night – Germany 3 Portugal 2 - and posed rather awkwardly in front of some public sculpture...

We walked back along the Blvd St Germain to St Germain des Pres and avoided the overpriced tourist traps of les Deux Magot and Café Flore for a less well known place down the road for a tasty coffee...

Then, down and over the river to the right Bank and walked past the Louvre, at which points the skies threatened a downpour which never materialised...

...and on up into the city towards the Pigalle and Montmartre looking for Chartier Restaurant which we finally found after an interminable time...

It was worth the search though – a superb lunch I’ve been waiting 26 years to experience again – Anne was here with her mum and sister a decade ago on a “solo” trip...

Post lunch, we bought a carnet of tickets for the Metro and took the tube back to the hotel where we found we’d been moved successfully to the very quiet second floor...

Anne took a rest while I went out to the local CD shops, the best of which was Gibert Joseph, where I found a couple of good Francoise Hardy releases, a 1968 disc by Jacques Brel and a new album by a girl I’ve not heard of, Loane...

Back home to Anne and, refreshed, we set out on foot over the river again to Place de Vosges...

...and then on up to the Bastiille via the Hotel du Scully (the mansion house after which our hotel was named)...

At a market we bought some tomatoes and nectarines for tea...

...and I picked up a Classical reading of the songs of Rammstein at the rather aptly named “OCD”...

We walked on past the Bastille (a monument these days rather than a prison)...

...into Les Passages and found a great wee place called the Bee Bar...

....where we both enjoyed a beer and Anne partook of the garlicky olives on offer...

Then the Metro from Bastille to the Eiffel Tower where, on the Field of Mars, it seemed the youth of Paris had congregated to watch the light show which commenced at 10 pm...

...and, while being less than spectacular, was nonetheless good to see...

We made what turned out to be a rather rash decision to walk back to the hotel...

...an hour later we were back at La Palette where we’d tried to get a drink last night...

Tonight we got the last two seats and had the privilege of paying £8 for two quarter litres of beer...

Suitably refreshed and with lighter pockets, we continued on our way home to a much better sleep, the big noise having been removed from our lives...

Off to Paris today for a five day trip based around Saturday’s Fete de la Musique celebrations – a national day of music all around France which was instigated in 1982, just after I made my last visit to the city having attended the video shoot for Soft Cell’s “Torch” single and the very interesting post shoot party...

Anyway, back to the humdrum present and to the garage first thing with the Cloudland Blue Mobile as Anne suffered a puncture yesterday...

Turned out to be a six inch screw – could have been very bad indeed but in the end it was fine and the tyre was actually able to be repaired for £15...

Amazing...

Picked up a couple of bacon rolls on the way home and relaxed this morning with some lovely Handel music whilst I read Tony Visconti’s autobiography, which led me to listen to a couple of albums on which he worked...

We normally take a taxi to the airport but, today, anticipating delays due to the coincidence of the opening of the Royal Highland Show with our flight and traffic jams upping the fare considerably, we trundled our case down to the main road and caught an Airport Bus...

We were checked in by 12 and off to “Eat” for a light lunch - blackberry yoghurt for me...

An uneventful flight was followed by a very long walk to the train which turned out to be packed and roasting hot, despite the rain outside, which had subsided by the time we arrived at St Michel...

A ten minute walk took us to our hotel in the heart of the St Germain district just along from La Sorbonne...

Our sixth floor room had an interesting view of the nearby Pantheon...

We unpacked and set off out for a walk down towards the river, before long we were sitting outside a café sipping Sauvignon Blanc and Chablis watching the world go by...

We walked to the St Michel district and on along the banks of the Seine trying to find a recommended bar, La Pallette – it took an age as we got lost along the way, though we did see some sights...

This is the French institute..

When we finally found it, the bar in question was packed with no room for us, so we moved on to one close by and enjoyed a cheeky wee glass of red...

...before walking back towards the two islands on the river...

...on the first of which we found a restaurant for dinner, “Ma Salle a Manger” – which was so expensive, I had to get Anne to pay so I wouldn’t know how much we’d spent...

...the food was incredibly tasty though and, after a long leisurely and enjoyable time, a stroll back along the river followed....

Then "home" to a frankly unacceptably loud air conditioning noise in our room...

This evening I called off my participation in more football and Mr Jim Park took my place...

On my way home I called in at HMV, purely because it was still open, and bought a 6CD set of music from films...

£7 kind of wasted really but then that's nothing new for a man with an addiction to CDs...

Later on a visit to Castle Brodski where Meg the Black Cat will spending a short holiday...

She seemed to settle in no problem...

Back home around 10:30 to some uploading...

For an upcoming trip, I need to renew my passport earlier than expected as the destination insists a certain amount of time left on the current passport...

Of course this is ludicrous and calls into question the point of any expiration date...

Anyway, of course I must comply and so a new passport photo was taken today at lunchtime...

This is a reasonably important photo as it will represent my identity for the next ten years - until I'm almost 60 years old...

I think I've fared not too badly since my last pic in 1999 and both later photos appeal to me more than that from 1989, where I was still struggling to accept ongoing massive hairloss!!

Top: 2008 v 1989; Bottom: 1999 v 2008

Played football again tonight - a new game for me on a new, bigger pitch and 8 a side with no chance to have a "rest" by going in goal...

No goals but set up two or three with my crafty dribbling and passing skills (ahem)...

Consequently quite knackering but in a good way - unlike being on a treadmill or a cross-trainer...

Later on, watched the end of Italy beating France then a taped season finale for the very good "Reaper" - looking fwd to 2009 already but mostly for TV reasons..

Sad man...

Sad news today as I discovered on the BBC website that Esbjorn Svensson was killed in a diving accident on Saturday...

Only 44...

His group EST along with the Bad Plus, Brad Mehldau’s trio and Medeski, Martin & Wood, for me, form the four pillars of true contemporary jazz and this is a huge loss...

The Bad Plus’ Ethan Iverson’s thoughts are more worthy than anything I could write here...

Last week, whilst in the taxi coming home from Keith’s wedding, we were chatting to his long time friend who was sharing the cab with us and we each had to say something interesting about ourselves – he said he’d once been 30 minutes from death when, after a mountain biking accident, he’d had to have his spleen removed...

My attempted jocular riposte was that we’re all only five minutes from death at any time...

Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, you could be dead in five minutes...

Indeed, our comedian friend Jim Park recently almost walked off a cliff by accident...

For the record, I didn’t go to the gym, I wasted my evening (even though I could be dead at any time) watching “Coronation St” and football...

Finally rose around 10am not feeling good – sore throat, stuffed up nose – I’ve not been ill for a while so I’m hoping this will pass quickly – recent “colds” have been known to last for over a month...

Wrote up the diary for the last couple of days and made breakfast at home with Anne – small toasted bacon sandwich with fruit juice and lashings of coffee...

Booked a ticket for The Bad Plus’ show at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival and a return bus ticket as Anne’ll have the car – and the bus is much cheaper for a trip in these days of excessive diesel prices (which are only going to get higher of course)...

Whilst reading through the various links to this blog, I discovered Tim Vesely, formerly of Rheostatics, has a new album out with his band The Violet Archers – after some research I bought it over the net on a “double format” basis – meaning I received the album immediately by download with a physical CD on its way from Canada...

You can download the title track from here for free and the record label (which stocks hundreds of great Canadian bands) is here - they offer a free ten track sampler of their catalogue for download...

While waiting for the download to complete I wrote a first draft lyric for the new chord sequence I was working on last week - initial title is "Blend"...

Then, before having a chance to give the new album a listen, it was off to sister-in law Jane and husband Bobby’s place – today is Bob’s birthday and he treated us to one of his excellent BBQs...

During the visit we were able to present brother-in-law Keith and his new wife Maureen with their wedding photos...

I’m proud to say everyone was impressed with my handiwork and Keith & Maureen thanked me with some vouchers to be used at the Filmhouse – quite apt...

Here're Keith and niece Kitty this afternoon...

Back home, after spotting a courgette taking shape in the garden...

...we watched the Czech Republic throw away a two goal lead and lose 3-2 to Turkey, the latter’s last two goals coming in the last three minutes of the match...

Then listened to the great new album by The Violet Archers before calling it a night, having spent much of the day annoying Anne with my incessant coughing...

Up at 7:15 and showered, dressed and down for an excellent breakfast...

No hangover but very tired indeed...

Some of our colleagues had not been to bed at all...

Enjoyed some more time out on the driving ranges before boarding the bus back to Edinburgh, the mood upon which was rather subdued, including no doubt a few very sore heads...

In Edinburgh by 12 and back home on local transport to give Anne the low-down...

Spent much of the afternoon organising the final selection of around 60 pictures from Keith and Maureen’s wedding last week which will, in effect, be their wedding album...

Of course I’ll be giving them every photo over two discs so they can pick and choose themselves – the ones in the “album” have been doctored slightly re red-eye, cropping, re-colouring etc etc...
This shot is from the B&W cover of the three disc set...

More football today – Spain getting a last minute winner against unlucky Sweden and Russia managing a 1-0 win over the holders, Greece...

Between these, another good episode of Dr Who...

After the Greece game I was too tired to keep my eyes open and headed for bed at 10:30, feeling like a cold was coming on...

Happy Birthday to Sister Pam...

Today was the annual “Away Day” courtesy of “The Man”...

A very long day started with a bus trip to South Queensferry for a lovely, tasty breakfast at the Rail Bridge Bistro before a short boat trip, on the Maid of the Forth...

...out to Inchcolm Island...

...where we explored the Abbey answering quiz questions and lazed around in the sunshine before having a trip on an inflatable speedboat type thing...

...out to some further islands populated by seabirds including cormorants, terns, shags and, my favourite, puffins...

Then the boat back to Queensferry and onto the bus again for a trip down to Peebles and the Cardrona Hotel & Golf Club where we enjoyed a small buffet on arrival and took part in various activities, including Golf Driving Range, swimming and watching Italy and Rumania draw 1-1...

In the evening, a sit down meal, followed by more competition between three pre-selected teams involving the invention of cocktails, Twister and karaoke...

What I’ve not mentioned thus far is that the entire day was fuelled by drink...

Champagne at breakfast, drinks on the boat to the island, Elderberry wine on the island, drinks on the boat back from the island, lager and alcopops on the bus to Peebles, drinks with the buffet, drinks while we took part or watched the golf and swimming, drinks with and after the meal...

By 2:30 am, we’d been drinking for around 17 hours and I’d had enough and headed for bed...

My room mate, like me, was a rather loud snorer and so very little sleep was to be had – probably 2.5 hours tops...

I’d tried to use my cash card in a machine which kept rejecting it, so I was on my way to another when who should come along but Brodders...

Possible drink with the Creek boys in a week or so...

Headed to HMV and picked up the new Coldplay album...

Tasty...

Before heading home in the evening, walked along to FOPP and bought the new Uriah Heep album...

Back home, Anne was off out with chum Lynn so I listened to the new albums and compiled three various artists CDs for The Man’s Party Bus tomorrow – we’re off for our annual day away drunken shenanigans...

A great night tonight as we played 7-a-side football in a torrential downpour, just the sort of weather that sorts the men out from the boys...

I played as well as I have since probably a year or so before I broke my ankle, scoring two goals and even putting in a few tackles...

Really enjoyed it...

The drive home was a bit messy though as I was absolutely soaked to the skin...

Later on, a new sitcom starring Kelsey Grammer and the last in the current series of “The Big Bang Theory” both entertained before bedtime...

This pointed to a dislike however, despite this, her toe was tapping...

Def Leppard - Yeah!

To FOPP at lunchtime and, for £3, a new band entered the Crispycat Towers library - Def Leppard, via their 2006 covers album "Yeah!"...

In the evening, I was in the mood to go to the gym but was thwarted (it says here) by Anne going to her keep fit and leaving me transportless...

So I watched football (Holland v Italy and France v Rumania) and listened to Def Leppard instead...

Part of me likes it - since the 14 tracks are almost without exception some of my favourite tracks from my favourite bands from the early 70's...

But part of me thinks "why did they even bother?" as their cover versions are just that - covers, not interpretations - they have recreated each song in a manner which pays slavish adherance to the original and, frankly, added nothing...

An ok LP...

Later on, "Coronation St" on tape and "Numb3rs" live entertain before bedtime...

Highlight of the Day : Not being able to go to the gym
