To Glasgow around 1:30 pm with Anne for tonight’s sold out Simple Minds gig at the SECC...

Pre gig though, some Xmas shopping took place and gifts for the Exec Producer were procured, not without some difficulty and some goodies remain “on list” as opposed to “in Xmas present hiding place”...

One CD bought – Shawn Colvin’s 1989 album (in fact her debut album) “Steady On”, which soundtracked our journey home around midnight...

The Minds were on the Cloudland Blue Mobile sound system as we drove to Glasgow...

A tasty pre-gig meal at La Vita off George Square...

...followed by coffee for me and G&T for the Exec Producer at Bar Ten in Mitchell Lane...

Then to the SECC and we picked up our tickets and after show passes from the box office and took our seats as support act The Alarm went through their paces...

A bit like what the Clash might sound like if they still existed (or were alive)...

Simple Minds, on the other hand, were excellent...

A great set (mostly the hits as you might expect of a band with such a pedigree) but a brave move indeed to play the whole of "New Gold Dream" from 1982...

I think maybe some of the lesser known tracks took the crowd by surprise but, for me, they were highlights and harked back more to the previous couple of albums "Sons and Fascination/Sisters Feeling Call" (my personal favourite) and "Empires and Dance"...

In contrast, the album’s two big hits, "Promised You A Miracle" and "Glittering Prize" seemed to point forwards to the commercial peak of the band – by which time I’d abandoned my post teenage fervour...

On this basis of course you'll understand that the opening salvo which included "I Travel", "Love Song" and "The American" was top notch stuff for me...

I also liked the treatment of "Chelsea Girl" too - a masterstroke to have drummer Mel Gaynor take lead vocals...

Reasonably new bassist Eddie Duffy seemed to have no problem reproducing all the driving lines from the originals and gave a very dynamic performance (and was extremely sexy on stage – oh to look like that whilst performing!!)...

Keyboardist Mr Gillespie had the classic synth sounds down pat too...

Of course the crowd was amazing, on their feet from start to finish – a homecoming gig for this biggest of Glasgow bands – even though the two main members now live in Italy...

All in all, a great night but we were sorry not to make it along to the after show party but the drive home through the fog was bad enough around 11:30 without hanging out with the stars till all hours...

Highlight of the Day : Simple Minds...

Personally, I thought "Life In A Day" would have made a better blog title... :-)
Sounds good, wish I'd gone!

Aye - or maybe "cacophony"...

It was good though...

Sounds like it was a great night. I got an email the other day saying that they'll be playing at Edinburgh Castle in July.

Quite fancy it.
