Playlist
A couple of the CDs of the day (brought with us digitally) soundtracked part of the day, as did T Dream and an old podcast...
Tuesday and another gallery/museum in prospect - the biggest...
Not played today was today's CD...
Box No 20 Elgar to Fitkin...
Morton Feldman’s 1979 String Quartet, the first of his later “long pieces”...
The world premiere recording, from 1993 by The Group for Contemporary Music...
One 79 minute movement...
A close listen required...
Which is what it got two days ago...
Anyway, breakfast - including fruit options...
Eggs today again too...
But first...
Views...
Weather...
Out into it...
The number 22 took us to town...
..and a tram took us back to Museumplein for the second day running...
We walked up to the Rijksmuseum - we were early so visited the shop - one Night Watch mints tin purchased...
And in...
There now follows a tour of the museum from basement to top floor...
There are over 800,000 artworks in the collection, which you can click on there for a closer view etc...
I will keep comments to a minimum because (a) I'm lazy (even though I torture myself by writing this almost every day) and (b) there are quite a lot of pictures - almost 200!
OK, into the basement - where the oldest items are...
This "clock" is actually a video screen - the artist continually rubs out and re draws the clock hands as the minutes pass...
Lovely old colourful paintings...
...and carvings and furniture...
Shipping models...
Musical instruments...
Up a floor...
More furniture...
...pottery...
Diplomacy works...
Paintings and furniture...
Up another set of stairs...
A glimpse of a reproduction of a masterpiece...
Large rooms...
The Battle of Waterloo..
Artifacts...
More excellent paintings...
Silverware...
More paintings...
The old days equivalent of cat videos...
The Dutch connection to Japan and the Far East...
Closer to home...
Van Gogh...
Not Van Gogh...
Architecture...
What's that in the distance?
What's that in the distance? But first...
What's that in the distance?
Nearly there...
But first...
Finally...
It's still being worked on...
So, views are limited...
...and , sometimes, obstructed...
Good to see it - I think we may have previously seen it in 1982...
And onwards for more religion, royalty and wars...
Glassware...
...and rooms reconstituted...
The massive library...
Ssshhh...
More war...
The repro again as we made our way to the top floor...
A Nazi chess set...
Into the 20th century, with meagre representation...
...and, finally, back to the foyer...
After 3.5 hours of wandering around enjoying all of the above, out we went into the cold...
And over the road and up to Cafe Heuvel on the corner of the Spiegelgracht and Prinsengracht...
Coffee, hot chocolate and...
...apple cake with cream, so good, it was scoffed before it could be pictured...
A walk along Kerkstraat - what's that in the distance?
Only the Hans Brinker "hotel", where we stayed in 1982...
One of Anne's least favourite hotels...
I vow to stay here if I ever come back on my own!
We kept going and walked along the flower market and over towards Waterlooplein...
...and Rembrandt's house...
Nearby, we found Record Friend Elpees, which we also found 15 years ago when here for Anne's 50th...
The giant King Crimson record is still in the window, if a lot dustier...
In, but, mostly, as you would expect from the shop name, LPs...
But I bought this for a Euro...
More walking, to the Nieuwmarkt - where we brought in the New Year a long time ago...
A heat and a drink - at Cafe de Zon...
More walking and a bus home...
...in the rain...
A rest before we ventured back to Javastraat for tonight's tea...
The best falafel wraps in the world...
12 Euros all in...
This place is recommended...
Back to the bar we visited on Saturday for a night cap...
...followed by another walk home and some TV and bed...
Packed day...
Highlight of the Day: Old stuff in a museum...
