I'm almost at the 20th anniversary of the start of this blog...
At close of play tomorrow (today, as I write this), over 30% of my life will have been recorded here...
In line with Brian Eno's diary of 1995, this was started in order to show the mundanity of the life of an unknown musician and artist...
Hardly anyone, of course, is interested...
But, I am...
One of my most enjoyable pastimes is to look back to see "what I did on this day in (enter year here)"...
So, it will continue...
Today, following the recent necessitated change as to how my daily playlist is presented, I am moving it to the end of these posts...
OK...
Onwards...
Now, what did I do today (yesterday)?
Up reasonably late, at 7:15...
...and listening to today's selection in my new #PlayEveryCD project - Nos 73-108, which took my past the point we moved into our current home, in April 1987 and on, into 1988...
This is, thus far, an enjoyable exercise - and I am filling some holes, digitally, with what is in the Red Books of CDs I own...
When we opened our record shop in 1991, I put quite a lot of my own CD collection into stock - many I have rebought over the years but many too are missing - these are the holes being digitally plugged during this new project...
Today, I tried to find the version of "Scheherazade" I used to own - I'm not sure it's the right one but it is contemporaneous...
Also, a couple of Chris Rea CD Singles have been reconstituted over the last couple of days, along with a CD of Rameau's "Les Indes Gallante", bought in Verona in 1988 - which is where today's plays got me to...
I've recently started following Blue Note on Blue Sky and, this morning, they posted a superb 90 track playlist of Blue Note in the 70s - funky stuff...
Yep, nabbed and added...
Anyway, also this morning, I created a new ambient LP for later release - based around eight different field recordings of Hong Kong city life, slowed to 12.5% of normal speed and adding in one long track from my old but not quite forgotten "Slow Squirrel Cage" project, my fave track from the original of that LP, "Like A Sunday", which will be the name of the new album....
I am liking the artwork...
Here, a snapshot of the work in progress...
Also this morning, a message to Edward Spark re Crazy Wisdom - I will be at Malcolm's on Wednesday as we start the new material...
"Hoping to get started with Malcolm this week. If you want to be involved (I know you always wanted to be in Crazy Wisdom) he wants his track to sound like "The Crackdown" by Cabaret Voltaire and "The Chase" by Giorgio Moroder... Give them a wee spin and see what you think? Pretty sure both are one or two chords max and that you could knock out similar rhythm beds in 5 minutes each (or less). If not up for it, perfectly understandable and I will crack on..."
At lunchtime, on Anne's return from the Gyle having had her phone fixed after accidentally locking herself out of it, a couple of "Resident Alien"...
Then, Sparky came up with the goods! A great wee piece, base around "Chase" by Giorgio Moroder...
I got to work...
...and soon had it up to an 11 minute epic, including, of course, some Disquietmusik guitar...
Then it occurred to add in parts from the Crazy Wisdom recording in 1998 of "Crowned Themselves King", given it was in the same key and a tempo increase was eminently possible...
And that was interesting too...
Then I recalled the site, FADR, I'd used a month or so back - and I was able, there, to isolate Malcolm's vocal...
Even better...
Calls from the Estate Agent and sister Sheila - a new viewing tonight - that panned for yesterday had been a very disappointing no-show...
Sheila covered it, post having been to the Western for X Rays re her heart condition - which appears to have gotten a lot worse recently - she declares herself back on the wagon - and hopefully that will help - she is 69 you know...
Just the to of us left of the original family five...
Meanwhile, Anne was off to Pilates and I worked on...
Eventually, I had a 7" and 12" mix with the isolated vocal plus my original instrumental...
Meanwhile, Sparky was honing his track and a revised version came through this evening...
Post baked potatoes (and, for me, peas) tea and University Challenge (a paltry 65 from your heroes)...
...and more "Resident Alien", it was back to work...
By close, I had the "final" 7" and 12" mixes and mastered it all to a 5 track EP...
Then, listening back to my own LP from this morning and, finally, bed...
A productive day - which is the best kind...
