It was nice to wake up in a really good hotel for a change...

Even if the view was a car park...

We checked out but, once again, were able to leave our bags behind...

Today's trip was to Oranienburg, north of Berlin...

Off we went...

...and onto the first train of the day...

Breakfast at the Hauptbahnhof...

We could not go from here to our target though...

And so, to Gesundbrunnen...

...for the long S-Bahn journey to Oranienburg...

Just visible and no more, swifts were nesting in the entrance to the station..

Then...

Worst Euro Ever...

...and a walk into town...

...and, at the other end of the main street, the almost 400 year old Oranienburg Palace...

From 1858 to 1925 it was converted into a teacher's seminary...

From 1933–37 it was an SS barracks re the staffing of the concentration camp, whose prisoners were used for slave labour, then a police academy...

Damaged by bombs in World War II, it was externally restored by the communist regime from 1948-1954....

After temporary use by the Red Army, it was an officer school for the barracked People's Police from 1952 and, later, barracks for the Border Troops of the German Democratic Republic, until 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall....

Today, the palace is a museum of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg...

Numerous valuable objects of baroque handicrafts and paintings are on display, including paintings with connections to the castle and its inhabitants, partly also individual pieces of the original interior...

I took advantage of this water spray to cool down...

Palace gardens (not entered)...

..and the rear of the building...

It was quite hot...

From the air...

This picture was taken from an impressive display near the palace, telling the entire history of the city...

All over Germany, you can find these plaques in the ground, commemorating those persecuted and murdered by the Nazis...

Anyway, did I mention it was very hot...

and so, it was time for beers...

...and we ended up enjoying more schnitzels...

...at Altstadt Klause...

...before taking a walk along the river...

Very peaceful indeed...

Around 3, time to head back to Berlin to move hotels, this our journey...

It was preceded by the long walk back to the station...

We were soon on the train...

..and, an hour and forty minutes later, were back at the hotel...

...to pick up our bags and take a two stop S-Bahn ride and a bus trip to reach our last hotel...

Knowing bus times was important...

...as our hotel was in the middle of nowhere really...

...but was adequate...

In hindsight, we should have just booked a third night at the luxury place...

Oh well...

This evening, we decided to head back to Kastanien Allee for a third biryani of the trip...

It's good to know the bus times...

The trip to the restaurant took 80 minutes and involved a bus, a regional train, an S-Bahn, a U-Bahn and a tram...

...but we got there...

Beers enjoyed...

...slightly messier than before biryanis enjoyed too...

...and one last look round our favourite area of the city...

.....before the five modes of transport trip home...

It was going to be hot...

...but we would not be here...

Highlight of the Day : Oranienburg...
