Every time might be the last time...

Playlist
Cloudland Blue Quartet - Gewitter
Various - Cloudland Blue Eclectic Selection 2016

A nice breakfast which went unpictured after arriving at the table but involved Full English and Poached Eggs on Toast - can you guess which of us enjoyed what?

Out into the sun...

...and making the first of a few field recordings today, as we walked down the hill...

...noting good views...

Soon, we were back at the market place...

...and went into the Town Hall for a look around...

The main hall was impressive...

...and we enjoyed a short film about and, afterwards, artefacts of Joseph Boruslawski, who, despite being only 90cms tall, lived to the age of 98...

Also on display were paintings by artist Clement Burlison...

Various other rooms also proved interesting and worth a picture or two...

Then, on to the Cathedral, further field recordings being made as we approached and made our way inside...

The castle can also be seen from the quad in front of the cathedral but is closed to visitors given it's now owned by the university...

We did not take the opportunity for a look in the library...

The cathedral though, was impressive...

We bought tickets to climb the 325 steps to the top of the spires...

...from where excellent views were afforded...

The beast and its Exec Producer were up high...

Later this afternoon, we would look up to here from down there...

Time to descend...

...after one last look...

Back into the interior, following an illuminating conversation with the staff member tasked with counting roof visitors back down...

I advised that every time I descend a tower I've climbed, I wonder if it will be my last...

After the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 around 3,000 Scottish Soldiers were held captive in the cathedral...

It was freezing...

This clock tower was the only thing made of wood the prisoners did not burn for heat...

At the very top is a thistle, which reminded them of home...

Onwards...

A brief service was also recorded to add to things possibly to be used for future work...

Fenwick Lawson's "Pieta" was particularly good...

..as were a work by Paula Rego...

...and "The Ikon of St Hild"...

Onwards...

The altar too was impressive...

...with its great big organ, subject of many eschewed CDs in the gift shop...

Outside, kind of, and the cloisters too were good...

Finally, to the sound of (also recorded for posterity) bells, we exited...

A final view of the whole building but not the last view of the day by any means...

We walked back down to the old town...

...and down to the river...

...under this bridge, which we would end up crossing later today...

On returning from the banks to the streets above, a quick visit to the Oxfam shop resulted in four purchases (see below)...

On to explore a frankly rather disappointing Fowler's Yard...

..and then over the bridge to another part of town...

We were basically just walking around looking at things and I was photographing most of them...

This turned out to be the prison...

Back towards the cathedral...

...crossing the bridge we'd gone under earlier, as pictured above...

...church gardens...

...great wee streets...

...and over the river yet again (it coils around the city, passing it twice)...

Back to the banks...

...on the other side of the cathedral...

..until, eventually, as noted above, we viewed it from below, from a spot previously pictured from above...

I took the opportunity to picture today's acquisitions...

Then, after a bit of a rest, we continued along the bank...

...a route which continued to provide splendid views...

At the other end, we climbed the hill, in the general direction of our hotel...

Looking back...

We stopped off at Ye Old Elm Tree for refreshments and to watch from afar as Queen of the South managed a 3-3 draw away at Airdrie...

After a rest back in the room, we went down to the adjoining Indian Restaurant for a tip top evening of culinary delights...

...before retiring for the evening, with a reasonably long trip on the cards for tomorrow morning...

Before finally doing "Lights Out", I wrote up yesterday's entry and uploaded today's pics to the blog in preparation for writing this when we get home on Thursday...

Highlight of the Day : The Cathedral - and the Indian - and new music...
