Ready for action pre 7...
...and off we go...
Some work on who knows what (probably tidying up yesterday's demos) before a tasty breakfast...
...featuring Anne's bubbled poached egg...
The 10 CD box has been applied to the living room shelf having finally having had its rip completed...
Out for a walk for some supplies at Tesco and the butcher, noting the ongoing knocking down of what was once Woolworth's and a variety of other shops...
Back home, a visit from wee Rocky - she is becoming bolder...
...but still does not stay for long...
This afternoon, post compiling the current tour setlist of Soft Machine, it was out to my mum's to attend a consultation with the ear man...
One ear needs to be cleaned out - the other, inexplicably, the one which she uses to answer her phone, on which she claims to be able to hear nothing, is fine...
Hmmm, from there to Dr Prog's to pick him up as we drove to Kinross for tonight's gig by the aforementioned Soft Machine...
We dined at the Central Fish & Chip Shop in our target town, while Anne enjoyed this at home...
We know who the winner was...
Post slap up feed, enjoyed in a doorway, sheltering from the rain, it was onwards to The Green Hotel and through the back...
...to the excellent venue...
...and front row seats secured...
This sign was much appreciated but, ultimately was not really required given the volume of the band...
Ready for action...
The current, umpteenth, line up of The Soft Machine is, left to right...
John Etheridge – guitar (joined 1975)
Asaf Sirkis – drums (joined 2023)
Theo Travis – saxophones, flutes, keyboards, piano (joined 2015)
Fred Thelonious Baker – bass (joined 2020)
Cracking stuff!
The First Set comprised (source LP in brackets):-
Penny Hitch ("Seven" - and "Other Doors" - due June 2023)
Other Doors ("Other Doors")
The Visitor at the Window ("Other Doors")
Tales of Taliesin ("Softs")
Heart Off Guard ("Hidden Details")
Broken Hill ("Hidden Details")
Fourteen Hour Dream ("Hidden Details")
Gesolreut ("Six")
Someone has very kindly uploaded a 15 minute video of Tales of Taliesin/Heart Off Guard/Broken Hill to YouTube - you can see my baldy head next the bearded Dr Prog, right down the front...
Half time...
...and a surprise, as erstwhile colleague, Laurie Dempster came and introduced himself - now retired and living in nearby Aberfeldy, where he's managed to found a rugby club - a nice wee chat re the old days before he returned to his seat for the second half...
...which was also top notch...
The same kind person above has also uploaded a 24 minute video of Out-Bloody-Rageous/Hidden Details/Hazard Profile Part One to YouTube - again you can see my baldy head next the bearded Dr Prog, right down the front...
All too soon it was over - although I note from setlists posted on the web, we got a different encore from usual...
The Second Set comprised:-
Bundles ("Bundles")
Joy of a Toy ("Volume One" - and "Other Doors")
Back in Season ("Other Doors")
One Glove ("Hidden Details")
Kings and Queens ("Four")
Out-Bloody-Rageous ("Third")
Hidden Details ("Hidden Details")
Hazard Profile Part One ("Bundles")
Encore
Out of Season ("Softs")
All in all then, they covered almost all of the main catalogue of the band, with the exception of "Volume Two", "Five" and "The Land of Cockayne"...
They are set to return in November - I have a feeling we will be there...
Dr Prog was on top form, dancing out of the venue...
A quicker drive home than that to Kinross, re the time of night and the good Doc was soon dropped back home and then your correspondent returned to Crispycat Towers pre the end of "Question Time"...
An excellent evening indeed...
Highlight of the Day : Soft Machine...
