It may be possible to take too many photos in an art gallery...

Playlist
Various - Cloudland Blue Eclectic Selection 2020

Up early, even earlier, given we were an hour ahead...

Yesterday's acquisitions remained sealed till we got home...

The views from the office this morning...

...included an excellent buffet breakfast...

...and artwork adorning the walls of the hotel...

Out just before half nine and a walk, again, to Marienplatz...

..through deserted Sunday morning streets, accompanied by a plethora of church bells...

Views of the square in the early morning sun...

We started a walk towards the University district, with an ultimate target of the Modern Art Gallery, the Pinakothek der Moderne...

I made some field recordings in the Max-Josef Platz...

...while some tourists enjoyed what looked like an enjoyable tour...

Onwards into the grounds and courtyards of the Residenz Palace...

We continued past the picturesque Odeonsplatz

...and popped into the Bavarian Academy...

...where a month of outdoor concerts was being held to support the arts...

On, up Ludwigstrasse...

...and over the road...

...and into the University district for a leisurely coffee...

...before heading to the gallery...

...not this one though, which we visited the last time we were here...

...but...

 this one...

The Pinakothek der Moderne...

In for, we discovered, as it was Sunday, just one of your European Euros each...

We got our bearings for what turned out to be an almost two hour wander around...

It's a very impressive building indeed...

The first thing to catch our eye was a mirror at the top of the stairs which appeared to have been shot at...

More later...

Andy Warhol was here...

...as was Josef Beuys...

...as was Josef Beuys by Andy Warhol...

Georg Baselitz was here...

...with his deconstruction of Mondrian...

...and upside down people...

..and birds...

The building itself has some huge spaces...

..and some Rauschenberg...

...and De Kooning...

..and the unmistakable work of Franz Kline...

...and Robert Motherwell - this might have been my favourite room...

More Motherwell...

..and close up Kline...

...plus, new to me, Blinky Palermo (not his real name)...

I liked the cut of his jib...

Children reading philosophy on film...

The fluorescent lights of Dan Flavin...

...an entire room of Anselm Kiefer...

...including one of his "Hitler salute" paintings...

Back to the main hall and the shot mirror, almost inevitably, "Untitled"...

...by Astrid Klein...

By chance, Anne's face was obscured by a bullet-hole as she strolled into this pic...

...so I set up another...

Some photos by Michael Schmidt...

...and a work by me, aping the work of someone else, whose name I did not note and which is too blurred now to make out - as it should be in the art world...

Some photos by Wolfgang Tillman, including a young man urinating on a chair...

Oh yes - it's art, don't you know...

Portraits abounded here...

This was by Ian Wallace, a British artist, a combination of photography and painting...

More by Astrid Klein...

And then, a large exhibition called "Feelings" - with nothing about anything notated at any of the works, even the creator's identities (although there was a guide you picked up only upon exiting) - so I'll let these speak for themselves...

Anne found this piece particularly creepy...

This was a video of what looked like the inmates of an asylum - would have made an excellent backdrop to a live performance by Mr CBQ but my World Tour has been cancelled due to the pandemic...

The beast in a mask was about its business in a German gallery with its masked Exec Producer...

As we tried to make our way to the basement, an attendant pointed out my bag need to be handed in - an hour into our visit - fair enough...

The resultant work of art was entitled "Choosing Locker Number 268"...

And so, downstairs to the "design" department...

Including cars...

Here we are reflected in the roof...

...and Bauhaus...

I do like a bit of Bauhaus...

And old technology...

I do like a bit of old technology...

This is possibly the largest radio I've ever seen...

More funky furniture...

...and more obsolete tech...

...although I know many people on Twitter who would covet this...

...and this...

...and this...

...and this...

Yves Klein was in the house...

...by Ingo Maurer...

More obsolete tech, on rotating displays...

Anne liked this bench - one for the garden maybe, with its star-like LEDs...

Back upstairs, the final exhibition was of the work of K H Hoedecke, much of which seemed to be things, mainly trial sketches on paper, which, had I been him, I would have been embarrassed to have on display (but, to save his blushes, I didn't include those here)...

His completed works were appreciated though...

Anne waited outside, post collecting my bag from the basement, as I had a look around the shop - I do like a gallery shop...

...but I ended up ordering a book from the gallery online to have it delivered to the house...

Result...

Who's that outside?

It's the Exec Producer...

Back out into the sun -  a very enjoyable gallery visit - our first time at the Pinakothek der Moderne...

Back past the Museum Brandhorst...

And so it was lunchtime...

On, to nearby Turkenstrasse for beers...

...and the best burger in town, plus a rather large amount of sausages on a bed of sauerkraut...

Post an excellent lunch, we made our way over to the English Gardens...

I told Anne of the time, when I lived her in 1979, that the young boys in the hostel found out about the tradition of nude sunbathing in these gardens and how we'd come up for a look...

...and been disappointed to find none...

...but...

...not today, oh no...

Weird behaviour indeed...

Still, each to their own...

The place was packed - you would not believe we were living through a pandemic...

The geese were out...

As seven years ago, we walked past the Haus der Kunst - although this time we did not go in for a look around and to partake of cake...

Down at the river, next to the gallery, people were enjoying the surfing opportunities...

Our walk continued...

...into the Hofgarten behind the Residenz...

...and on over to Briennerstrasse, spotting a fallen idol...

...and the torch on the monument to the victims of the Holocaust...

...onwards past the Frauenkirche...

..and back to Marienplatz - eschewing the bar where, in around 1982, we met my young chum from '79, Markus Schwammberger, for some beers and ran off into the underground without paying...

Their time taken to acknowledge our presence meant that payback will have to wait another few years...

Instead, we sat with a view of the clock tower for the performance of the puppets at 5 o'clock...

...before heading along Kaufingerstrasse to Stachus...

...passing the spot where I busked in '79, singing the Tubes' "TV is King" for a few pfennigs...

We walked from Stachus back down to Sendlinger Tor...

...and back to the hotel for a rest, before heading out for dinner at Heimwerk on Pestalozzistrasse...

Next to a romantic young couple...

..where a veggie schnitzel was enjoyed in the open air...

and so another packed day came to an end...

Highlight of the Day : The whole day itself...
