Up early and out just after 5 into a blurry morning...

...to the airport...

...for breakfast...

...and a flight out of the wind and rain...

...to the sun and relative warmth of Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg, Southwest Germany - Deutschland's 8th largest city...

A half hour trip by S-Bahn and U-Bahn...

...including a switch at Vaihingen...

...took us to our destination of Marienplatz...

A hotel rather than an apartment - this the view out over the square...

...with the "Zackbahn" to take people up the nearby hill...

Out for a walk to the centre, down Tübinger Straße with views to the right and the left...

Churches...

...breweries...

...more churches...

Lunch at the top of the Königstraße, then on down the longest shopping street in Germany...

Noting more good churches...

...and good trees...

To the Schlossplatz with the Kunst Museum...

...places, fountains and statues...

Beer was, of course, required...

...before we continued our initial exploration...

Into the Oberer Schlossgarten...

...with its Eckensee...

...and opera house...

Back to the square...

...and the Neues Schloss...

The beast was about its business in downtown Stuttgart...

Alte Kanzlei...

...and the Landesmuseum Württemberg...

Out...

...to Schillerplatz (Schiller was Germany's most important classical playwright but also a poet, a philosopher, a physician and historian)...

Here the statue from 1839...

...which somehow...

...survived the Second World War bombing raids that flattened the majority of the city...

...and continues to look onto the Landesmuseum...

Back to the square - we will visit this tomorrow...

...but for now, there was this - Saturn...

I had not realised the first new Udo Lindenberg album for eight years had been released on Friday - I had come with a short list of four of his thirty six (now five of thirty seven) studio albums which I don't own...

This was reduced by two...

Further walking - down to the Hauptbahnhof...

...then, looking for what was said to be a "good area", the Bohnenquartier, or Bean Quarter (because the residents used to grow a lot of beans apparently...

Round the back of the Neues Schloss...

...and, although somewhat disappointing, the Bean Quarter provided another excuse for a rest....

Oh dear - too much bier?

Back to the centre, passed the Leonhardskirche...

...and to the Markthalle...

...and back towards Königstraße, passed the Stiftskirche...

Noting the first ever television tower off in the distance...

...we made our way back to base...

...and Marienplatz for more beers...

...at Cafe Kaiserbau...

Back at the hotel, I noticed this from the window - I nipped over for a look but nothing enticed...

A visit to a nearby Thai restaurant rounded off the day...

Tofu based Thai Red Curry - nice...

...and this, the view from the office this evening...

A good first day in Stuttgart...

Highlight of the day : Holiday...
