York I

Playlist
Peter Gabriel – Hits
Hesperion XX – Espana Antigua
Cloudland Blue Quartet – Soundingfall

Up and breakfasted (full English again) settled and back on the road by 9:20am...

We drove through heavy rain to arrive in an overcast York...

We found our hotel easily, parked the car, checked in and walked into town – we were around ten minutes’ walk from the old town...

Found The Shambles...

...and the old market and popped into the Last Drop Tavern for some refreshment, including a beer called Screech Owl for Anne...

When we emerged, the rain had started and these showers continued on and off for the rest of the day, though it remained warm...

For lunch today, pasties from the pasty shop...

Then to York Minster...

...and the surrounding grounds, including a very old impressive building...

...The Treasurer's House, which was the home of deaf and dumb 18th century astronomer John Goodricke....

Although he died at the age of 21 and was only active as an astronomer for 18 months, he made a series of ground breaking discoveries which still influence astronomers today...

"From a window in the Treasurer's House, City of York, the young deaf and dumb astronomer John Goodrick, who was elected a fellow of the Royal Society at the age of 21, observed the periodicity of the star ALGOL and discovered the variation of CEPHEL and other stars thus laying the foundation of modern measurement of the Universe."

Uninterested in measuring the Universe, Anne availed herself of some new jewellery in a nearby shop, before we walked home and took our cases from the car up to our room...

In the evening, as the sun finally broke through, we walked through the Mickelgate...

....to just inside the city walls and The Old Siam restaurant, as recommended by our host...

An excellent tasty Thai meal followed, before we walked back home to slumber...

Highlight of the Day : Thai food...
