Various - Cloudland Blue Eclectic Selection
Up late...
Sun was out...
Skies were blue...
Lights were strange...
Out...
Views...
To the Inn for breakfast...
Fruit bowl for Anne...
Muesli for me...
But that wasn't it - followed by eggs Benedict for me...
A half breakfast for Anne...
All of which set us up for a no need for lunch really day...
Out...
...back to the room...
Prepped and then into the car for a beautiful relaxed drive North through the Yorkshire Dales National Park...
...arriving at Bolton Castle around 10:20...
...with the nearby St Oswald's Church...
The castle dates fort the 14th Century, partially ruined, partially open to walk around and see how things were back in the day - here's the story and here are some pics...
In we went...
...and looked out...
...and went down to the "basement" first of all...
Bar and kitchen...
Bakery...
Armoury...
back up and outside to the main courtyard with what looked like gallows...
Much of the castle is ruined but the guides give a good idea as to how it once looked...
We were not the only visitors...
Most of the pics are from my phone...
But I also had the "big" camera with me...
More from the lower floors...
This was the chapel...
From the first floor, Anne pointed out where we were heading shortly...
The tour continued...
The main room on the first floor...
With its old fireplace...
This is where Mary Queen of Scots was first "kept", for six months, when she came to England seeking the help of her cousin Elizabeth - who had her imprisoned and, eventually, executed, 19 years later...
This was a view she would have enjoyed during her time here...
The nursery...
...with toy castle...
...and other things...
..including items to assist with the learning of reading...
To the Great Hall...
Mary Queen of Scots' bedroom...
Up to the battlements for more views...
Then down, past the maze, for a bird display...
Featuring Dora the owl - nine years old - in the wild, the expected lifespan of such an owl is just 18 months, due to predation...
She was very friendly...
The young lady set us straight on the fact that owls' brains are so small, they are not very intelligent or indeed wise...
Then a hybrid falcon, half peregrine, half Saker...
...who impressed with it's flying skills, which it's still learning...
The bee house was being worked on but we did discover that, in the old days, people thought bees were a type of very small bird...
Speaking of which, here are the birds at the castle...
Dora was having a sleep...
A walk around the gardens, including the herb garden...
...and the vineyard...
...was followed by an enjoyable scone and coffee...
Then, a look at a sleeping wild boar...
...whose chums remained secreted in the woods...
...and a visit to St Oswald's church...
...then, a seat in the shadow of the castle...
Back in, to discover some previously unvisited areas...
...including the stocks...
...and dungeon...
...and well...
...before an archery display from the same girl who checked us in and who gave the talk on the birds...
Another nice drive home for drinks in the courtyard...
...and then a walk over to Grassington again...
Where a hare was bought and the filming had stopped...
...and another cat was spotted...
Back to the Devonshire for drinks...
...and Vet related programme photo inspecting...
...before enjoying a tasty curry over the road...
...at Rozis...
..and a walk home...
...for tonight's game between Scotland and Croatia...
Scotland had to win...
Croatia scored first despite pressure from the Scots...
A goal was pulled back and it was 1-1 with everything to play for...
But, in the end, the team ranked 30 places above us, proved too strong and skillful and ran out 3-1 winners, including an excellent goal from Modric...
All over...
Oh well...
It's only a game...
Lights out...
Highlight of the Day : Dora the owl...
