Beethoven - String Quartets Op 18, 130, 133
Up just after six and...
April over...
...and...
Anne arose and we prepped for the day and exited the apartment shortly before 9…
Walked around for a bit looking for a suitable breakfast spot...
... and eventually settled on Confeitaria Alianca - two excellent coffees, a chocolate bun thing and some bread, butter and jam for around 6 Euros…
A walk down towards the Tower...
...noting the moon at the University...
...and on into the Flores district…
It was 9:45 when the expected rain started…
Other than a couple of very short periods of respite, it continued all day…
Had a look round a small market, taken over by jewellery, and some impressive buildings, on our way down to the river…
A walk along the bank to the church of San Francisco - we did not go in…
It started to really pelt down now so we sought shelter in a wee coffee place, My Ribeira Cafe…
An ordering mix up led to two slices of excellent chocolate cake arriving at our table instead of two small chocolate cookies…
Not to worry…
We exited as the rain eased slightly and we climbed the hill to the cathedral…
We did not go in quite yet as the nearby Bishop’s Palace was closing shortly for lunch and we wanted to visit both…
So, we descended the other side of the hill to the Sao Bento Train Station, with its decoratively tiled concourse…
It was now pouring again…
To the side of the station was the Time Out food market of Portuguese specialities and snacks were enjoyed for lunch…
We had some time to spare before the palace reopened and once again needed to seek shelter from the pouring rain…
We walked back through Flores and found Wine Affairs, where a glass of wine, a glass of port and very comfy seating, were all enjoyed for 45 very relaxing minutes…
Back to the cathedral and combined tickets secured…
Our tour around the cathedral only took around 20 minutes but there was plenty to see, as these 55 photos testify...
Then, to the Bishops’ Palace, where our walk around took double the time of the cathedral…
Again loads to take in - I made a recording of the ticking of a grandfather clock - and excellent views of the Dom Luis I Bridge and the River Douro were provided (here come another 41 pics)…
A walk back towards home, through the still falling rain...
...and we found a wee place for a drink…
It featured “the great big pot of meat” which was providing sustenance to the locals…
Home at 4:45, foregoing string quartets in a church for string quartets in the apartment, with more beer…
At 5:30 the rain finally stopped, after almost 8 hours…
We had not let it ruin our day…
At 6:15, out, looking for a suitable venue for tea…
Much wandering around and much disappointment…
We eventually found a wee place back just around the corner from the apartment at 8pm…
Pizzas and beers enjoyed...
An episode of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” ended a packed, wet day…
Highlight of the Day : A relaxing Port…
