Weekly Playlist No 28

Welcome to the Cloudland Blue Weekly Playlist No 28...

As indicated on the cover, this week's 120 minute summary of a, once again, rather stern looking Mr CBQ's last seven days' soundtrack...

...comprises music from Uriah Heep, The Samuel Jackson Five, Sleepmakeswaves, Mogwai, Joseph Arthur, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Eno & Hyde, Band of Horses, Gentle Giant, Lady Gaga, Depeche Mode, Rush and, as ever, Cloudland Blue Quartet; with classical pieces by Purcell, Tallis, Dell'Arpa, Hartmann, Shaw and Higdon; and some tasty jazz from Allan Holdsworth, John Scofield, Hugh Hopper, Conglomorate and Henry Cow...

Also, over the last seven days, this...

...was created by light entering the CBQ camera...

Uriah Heep - The Law  5:24
from "Outsider"
This week's opener comes from the mighty (and mighty unfashionable but I like them ) Uriah Heep. A rocking track from their latest album which rocks like a rocky thing that's made of rock...

The Samuel Jackson Five - Coalesce  3:41
from "Seasons in the Hum"
..and leads into a couple of examples of 2014 post rock, firstly from the new rather short but still very good new LP by recently discovered and immediately admired Scandinavians The Samuel Jackson Five and...

Sleepmakeswaves - Perfect Detonator  5:54
from "Love Of Cartography"
...a very loud indeed piece from the just released collection from Australia's Sleepmakeswaves - all in all a good kick off trio before...

Purcell - Fantasia No 6 in F  3:20
from "The Lindsays : Tippett String Quartet No 5"
...we take things down a bit with a track from another of this week's new acquisitions, a disc recreating The Lindsay String Quartet's première of Tippet's 5th String Quartet in Sheffield back in 1992.  The quartet, commissioned by the Lindsays, was influenced in places by the work of Mr Purcell, hence his work being included in the programme...

Mogwai - Heard About You Last Night  5:25
from "Rave Tapes"
...and back to more "post rock" which is, of course, really just rock to be honest - with loud bits and quiet bits and repeated bits - it is, of course, much more trendy than Uriah Heep - but, for me it's the music not the trendiness that counts...

Allan Holdsworth - Letters Of Marque  7:03
from "IOU"
Some top notch jazz work next from the unbelievable hands of Allan Holdsworth - a track which is on a new compilation I created this week in yet another time wasting exercise...

Joseph Arthur - Walk on the Wild Side  4:01
from "Lou"
Another new discovery this week was Joseph Arthur's rather understated homage to his friend Lou Reed - they lived in the same building and hung out together apparently - upon the maestro's death, Arthur recorded a small selection of Reed's songs and this interpretation of Lou's greatest hit gives you a taster of how it turned out...

Tallis - In Nomine à 4 No. 1 for 4 Viols  2:56
from "16th Century Music for Viols"
Further downbeat relaxation is provided by a short piece from a disc of viol music from the 1500's, composed by Thomas Tallis, the peace of which...

Hawkwind - Kings Of Speed  3:48
from "Warrior On The Edge Of Time"
...is shattered by this, the closing track of and single from Hawkwind's 1975 opus - a single I bought on its release in May 1975 (as I did all Hawkwind's mid 70's singles, following on from "Silver Machine", in the vain hope of providing one of my favourites some further singles success).  The B Side was "Motorhead", written and sung by Ian Kilmister aka Lemmy.  The single did not chart but remains a fave...

John Scofield - Shoe Dog  8:13
from "This Meets That"
A lilting piece of laid back jazz from probably not quite as good as but different from Allan Holdsworth guitarist John Scofield - here with a brass section in support - this one just popped up on shuffleplay one morning and managed to make the cut...

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut  4:43
from "The Final Cut"
One of my all time favourite Pink Floyd songs along with "Comfortably Numb", this didn't make it onto my time wasting triple CD compilation of the longest track from each of the Floyd's albums which I compiled this week.  The announcement of a "new" LP was met with mixed reaction, given it's based on work on a side project to "The Division Bell" from 20 years ago - which perhaps should have gone into the new 20th anniversary DB box but I'll reserve judgement...

Dell'Arpa - Galliard  2:42
from "Italian Renaissance Dances, Vol. 1"
A very quiet piece from a delightful disc which popped through the letter box at Crispycat Towers this week...

Jethro Tull - Nothing Is Easy  4:27
from "Stand Up"
I've been listening to quite a lot of Tull, who were also the subject of a one-track-from-each-LP compilation this week.  I thought I had all their albums but ended up having to order three, of two of which I await the arrival, a real copy of "Thick as a Brick" having arrived yesterday to replace my burn of Dr Prog's copy (this last comment will mean nothing to non-regular readers)...

Hugh Hopper - Earwigs Enter  4:20
from "Numero D'Vol"
The first of two contributions to this week's playlist involving Soft Machine's erstwhile bassist, the late Hugh Hopper, who died in 2009 - this comes from a very worthwhile huge compilation of stuff from the Moon June label - available from Bandcamp - seven hours of top class music for just $2 - I urge you to partake of this and their other two three and four hour compilations available for free or a suggested $1 - maybe even buy some of their full price stuff...

King Crimson - Venturing Unto Joy Pt. 1  1:15
from "King Crimson 2014 Sessions"
As promised last week, here's the first published result of the recently commenced rehearsals for their upcoming USA tour by the new seven man King Crimson.  Yowsah!

Hartmann - String Quartet # 1 "Carillon" (1933). 3.- ----  6:38
from "Hartmann String Quartets 1 & 2"
...which takes us nicely into the third movement from Karl Amadeus Hartmann's first string quartet, written in 1933.  His work was pronounced degenerate art by the Nazis.  He withdrew completely from musical life in Germany during the Nazi era, however, unlike many others, he did not flee but remained throughout the war, studying in Austria with Webern and then helping to rebuild post the end of WWII.  A fascinating story.  This comes from a disc by the Pellegrini Quartet of Hartmann's first two quartets, the second written in 1946 - thus they bookend Hitler's time in power...

Cloudland Blue Quartet - Traffic Passing (Short Detail)  3:03
from "Twenty Four Paintings (Short Details)"
My own contribution to matters this week is a short detail from the 62 minute piece "Traffic Passing" which I am hoping will be released later this year as part of the "Twenty Four Paintings" project I've been working on for the last year....

Conglomorate - Perverted Foods  8:14
from "Precisely The Opposite Of What We Know To Be True"
...which fades into another piece featuring Hugh Hopper, which comes from a disc of improvisations by a group led by drummer Steve Clarke - virtually unknown but well worth your time if you can seek it out, along with music from Clarke's other projects Network, Groon and Necropolis...

Eno & Hyde - DBF  4:13
from "High Life"
A funky noisy African like piece from the second album of 2014 to emerge from the recent collaboration on Warp records by Brian Eno and Underworld's Karl Hyde.  Let's dance...

Shaw - Partita for 8 Voices : 1 Allemande  5:54
from "Roomful of Teeth"
This week, I decided to seek out works which have won the Pulitzer Prize for music and this very strange piece comes from the 2013 winning work by Caroline Shaw, performed by her group Roomful of Teeth. Wonderful stuff - if you give it a chance.  It segues nicely into...

Band of Horses - Blue Beard  3:22
from "Infinite Arms"
...the opening voices of this very tuneful little ditty from a new acquisition from my recent Glasgow trip, which I also featured last week, from Band of Horses.  One of the very few songs I've heard which uses "banana peel" in its lyric..

Henry Cow - Extract From "With The Yellow Half-Moon And Blue Star"  2:24
from "Legend"
...followed by more weirdness from Henry Cow, from an album I'd forgotten I have but which was happened upon via shuffleplay after wiping the iPod Classic and using the autofill process to refill it with three months' worth of music chosen randomly from the entire collection...

Gentle Giant - Another Show  3:30
from "Interview"
Often featured on these playlists is the great prog band Gentle Giant - this week's inclusion is due to my listening to their albums whilst they too were a subject of my time wasting compilation compiling project. This comes from their often overlooked album "Interview", on the supporting tour of which in 1976, I witnessed the band live at the Usher Hall here in Edinburgh, Scotchland.  A great night, fondly remembered to this day, nearly 40 years later..

Higdon - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra III. Fly Forward  5:19
from "Higdon & Tchaikovsky Violin Concertos"
More Pulitzer misc and the 2010 prize winner was this violin concerto written for and performed by Hilary Hahn by composer and self taught flautist, Brooklyn born and Tennessee resident, Jennifer Higdon.  As you can see, I've read her Wikipedia page.  Great music...

Lady Gaga - Summerboy  4:15
from "The Fame"
Three well known names round off this week's selection, firstly an excellent slice of pop by the not featured for a while Lady Gaga - an artist whose music is more often than not overshadowed by her "marketing" antics - but which is always worth a listen...

Depeche Mode - In Your Room (The Jeep Rock Mix)  6:20
from "Remixes 81-04"
...followed by an excellent remix of one of my all time fave Depeche Mode tracks, included for Fife based chum Chris-with-a-CH and Creek buddies Stu and Craig, if they're listening.  We have attended a few very enjoyable D Mode concerts together over the years...

Rush - The Way The Wind Blows  6:28
from "Snakes & Arrows"
...and for chum Paul Reynolds, we end today with a cracking track from his favourite group Rush's last but one album "Snakes and Arrows" - all three of the last trio popped up on shuffleplay as I enjoyed an early morning, sunny walk along the Water of Leith this week - it doesn't get much better than that...

OK that's it for another week, thanks for listening - I hope you enjoy the music and will come back again next week for more...
