Weekly Playlist No 25

Welcome to the Cloudland Blue Weekly Playlist No 25...

Twenty eight soundbites that have come out of the shadows into Mr CBQ's life over the last seven days...

during which time, this...

...was also created by light entering the CBQ camera...

The podcast is available to stream on Mixcoud...

Press play and off we go...

Horace Silver - The Jody Grind (pt 1)  2:29
from "Blue 45's"
We start this week's collection with two tributes.  Firstly to the jazz pioneer Horace Silver, Blue Note stalwart and encourager of many of the players who went on to define jazz in the 1960's and 1970's...

Grand Funk - The Locomotion 2:59
from "Shinin' On"
...and to Gerry Goffin who, almost anonymously, along with his then wife, Carole King, wrote many of the hits of the early sixties, which still resonate today.  His lyrics have become part of popular culture..

The Rezillos - Flying Saucer Attack  2:51
from "Can't Stand the Rezillos"
Before yesterday's news of the parting of Messrs Silver and King, this was to have been the starting off point for this week's podcast, a superb punky number from The Rezillos - who have reformed in recent years and present a very entertaining show indeed.  If you ever get the chance, do go along and support them...

Ke$ha - C'mon  3:34
from "Warrior"
Two tracks now from American ladies who have recently come to the fore, firstly Texan Ke$ha, who first came to my attention via her guest appearance as the Devil on Alice Cooper's last LP - prior to that she'd had quite a few hits, which had gone under the CBQ radar but are now appreciated..

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die  4:45
from "Born To Die"
...and current chart topper with her second album, Lana del Rey, this is the opening and title track of her debut album as Lana del Rey - she had previously issued recordings under her real name, Lizzie Grant but these were effectively extinguished from existence when her career as Del Rey was launched. Notwithstanding all the shenanigans and bollocks surrounding her rise to fame, her music as Del Rey remains always worth a  listen..

Muse - Follow Me  3:51
from "The 2nd Law"
A chance popper-upper on the old shuffleplay this week was this overwrought nonsense from Muse's last album - overwrought and nonsense but still great to listen to - has shades of Gloria Gaynors" I Will Survive" about it perhaps?

Vallet - Fortune angloise - Malle Sijmen - Slaep, zoete Slaep  4:07
from "Music From The Golden Age Of Rembrandt"
Not many new acquisitions this week but this is one - a 3CD collection of fairly obscure 17th Century Dutch music written at the time of Rembrandt - who, unlike so many of his contemporaries, does not seem to have had much of a musical bent to his work...

Johnny Harris - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin  9:17
from "All To Bring You Morning"
Scotsman Johnny Harris, who moved permanently to the states in 1972, orchestrated some of the best known tracks by the likes of Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey (e.g. "Light My Fire").  This comes from an LP recorded in 1972/3 for Warners which features Jon Anderson and Steve Howe of Yes, along with their then future drummer, Alan White.  A great funky album, if you can find it, as amply demonstrated by this long instrumental cover...

Richie Havens - Strawberry Fields Forever  3:31
from "Richard P. Havens, 1983"
Another cover, this time by Woodstock fave, the recently late Richie Havens from his excellent double LP "1983" - again worth seeking out - of its time but excellent nonetheless...

Roy Harper - Time Is Temporary  4:57
from "Man And Myth"
Following on from last week's inclusion of a Gary Glitter track, here's one from elder statesman of rock and one of my all time faves, Mr Roy Harper, also now facing trial.  This is taken from his 2013 album, which was seen very much as a return to form.  It's a great LP and I have no problem in separating his art from his personal life.  Innocent until proven guilty of course...

Shawn Colvin - Anne of the Thousand Days  4:26
from "All Fall Down"
Another shuffleplay popper upper this is a great wee song from Shawn Colvin's last LP. A consistently good songwriter, Colvin's LPs are always worth a wee investment of your time and, possibly, hard cash...

Cowell - Piano Piece (Paris, 1924)  4:07
from "Sound Forms For Piano"
And now some tasty avant garde classical stuff from the pen of the late Henry Cowell, who departed this world in 1965, played by the late Robert Miller, who exited in 1981.  This is one of Cowell’s most complex piano works, a virtual catalogue of his then new piano sonorities, featuring dense tone clusters played by forearms and pounding fists.  Yowsah!

Black Sabbath - Live Forever  4:47
from "13"
Sabbath's reunion album following the sad demise of Ronnie James Dio was a real return to form, especialy for Ozzy Osbourne and, for me, managed to capture all that was great about their original seventies sound - see what you think - always assuming you are familiar with the group's early output of course...

Piano Interrupted - The Unified Field  4:52
from "The Unified Field"
I was very impressed indeed with this quartet's music when I saw them play live in London back in April - so much so that I shelled out on the night for this, their second LP.  Wonderful combination of textures and sounds from the piano, laptop, cello and double bass line up...

Cloudland Blue Quartet - Time Waits  7:55
from "Riverleaves"
The inevitable track from Mr CBQ this week features my last soundscape work "Riverleaves" - biggest seller on the CBQ Bandcamp site.  This comes from the as yet unreleased unsegued and 15 minute longer version of the album.  Hope you like it...

Roger Eno - In Water  5:08
from "Little Things Left Behind 1988 – 1998"
A beautiful piece from Brian's brother, taken from the 2CD retrospective of recordings made a couple of decades ago now. Time flies...

Krokofant - Thispair  5:06
from "Krokofant"
Cracking King Crimson like jazz from this Norwegian three piece discovered by chance on t'interweb earlier this year.  Nice...

Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind  2:34
from "Blues & Soul Masters"
I bought a 2CD set of blues and soul 45's this week, 45 of them in all funnily enough and this was one of the few which I didn't have in the collection already...

Lady Antebellum - Just A Kiss  4:34
from "Own The Night"
For my sins, I'm a sucker for this kind of formulaic American overwrought pop and Lady Antebellum came into view a few years ago now, with their great song "Need You Now". This isn't quite as good but it's still very good.  Many people would give their eye teeth to be able to write songs like this...

Malojian - Check Mate  3:18
from "The Deer's Cry"
Another new discovery for 2014 is this Irish duo, which the Exec Producer and I saw in Glasgow earlier this year supporting Dar Williams.  Their slower songs are better but this uptempo piece was the one that entered the CBQ lugs during the course of the week, so here it is...

Spock's Beard - Something Very Strange (Sanctified Remix)  5:10
from "Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep"
The alternative version of one of the best songs from Spocks Beard's latest album - this coming from the second disc included in the deluxe version.  Not too proggy and certainly quite catchy...

Zemlinsky - String Quartet No.1 in A major, Op. 4: Allegretto  4:01
from "String Quartets 1 & 2"
Herr Zemlinsky was a player in early 1900's Vienna but is not as well known as the triumvirate of Berg, Schoenberg and Webern.  I picked up this disc of his first two string quartets for a couple of quid this week and it's well worth looking out for.  It's played by the Artis Quartett Wien.  Go for it...

Taketi Uloomu - Glass Fists  3:52
from "The Fifth Season"
Now a wee bit of electronica for you from this Japanese lady - a discovery from my London trip in April...

The Physics House Band - Abraxical Solapse  4:19
from "Horizons - Rapture"
...followed by some time shifting excellence from this very young Bristol based trio, which I caught live in Edinburgh this Spring, supporting 65 Days of Static and Sleepmakeswaves.  I was so impressed, I bought the CD EP (and had it autographed like a fanboy).  Can't wait for more from these talented jazz rockers...

It Bites - Send No Flowers  4:15
from "Map Of The Past"
A fairly new album which I'd forgotten all about until a couple of tracks were played for me recently by the old shuffle algorithm - making me aware once again of the excellence of this band.  Like the Malojian track earlier, this possibly isn't the best track on the LP but it's the one that was featured in this week's playlists and so it makes it into this playlist...

Depeche Mode - Angel  3:58
from "Delta Machine"
Opener both from the last Depeche Mode album and from their last tour, which elicited a night out for the Creek boys at the tail end of last year to the probably far too big SSE Hydro venue in Glasgow.  A superb gig, of which this was a nice reminder...

Myslivecek - First Sonata in A Major : Andante  5:12
from "Six Sonatas for Two Cellos and Bass"
Final track from this week's purchases - I was intrigued by the line up, cello being one of may favourite instruments.  So two cellos and a double bass could not be dismissed once seen.  The composer was a big influence on Mozart - who actually appears to have believed the story about Myslivecek's nose having been burnt off - when in fact it fell victim to the promiscuous composer's advanced syphilis.  The music's good though...

Agnes Obel - Fuel To Fire  5:30
from "Aventine"
Our closer this week comes from Danish songstress Agnes Obel's second album, which I bought on our train trip to Lille last year.  A beautiful way to end proceedings...

And that's it for another week - thanks for listening, hope you enjoy the music and will come back next week for more...
