Leaving Anne sleeping, I had a last look around - soundtracked by Messrs Fripp and Eno...

Down to the lake before the mist cleared...

Then to Berchtesgaden, which gets the benefit of the sun earlier...

Some good views in the early morning light...

Back home for breakfast...

...and last views from the balcony...

Then it was off...

..and driving back towards Munich...

But we had a full day before our flight so we stopped off at the Chiemsee...

..for a boat trip and some sightseeing...

We were off to see the Herrenchiemsee Schloss, built by Ludwig II as a monument to absolute monarchy and emulating Louis XIV's Versailles...

And, just for good measure, they were throwing in some modern art from the under restoration Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich...

We walked the mile or so from the jetty to the palace, eschewing the horse drawn option...

The palace was never finished - it lacks two wings which would have tripled its size and many of the rooms in what was built are incomplete...

The king only spent 10 days here before he died...

It was never his home..

No pics allowed inside but, suffice to say, the rooms which were completed were spectacular in the extreme...

This place is the ultimate representation of the combination of a man who was a bit nutty but who also truly had just too much money...

The modern art rested nicely in an unfinished wing - we saw works by Beuys, Warhol, Flavin, de Kooning, Chamberlain, Schonebeck, Baselitz, Polke and Reiner...

A nice ending to our trip...

Back outside the weather was turning...

Back over the water and into the car and very soon the rain was pouring...

We arrived in Erding in the early evening as planned and took shelter first in an Imbiss...

...where our last pork based meal was enjoyed...

...then, to the cafe over the road for our last taste of German cake...

With the rain now off, a quick walk around the town....

...before heading to the nearby airport, handing back the car and waiting for our flight...

...which was uneventful as usual...

Munich...

Edinburgh...

A taxi home to find even more CDs had been delivered...

A very good holiday indeed...

Despite all the beer and cake I consumed, the walking of well over 100 miles during the time away, I am pleased to advise, counteracted all acts of gluttony on my part...

Good to be back...

Highlight of the Day : Sightseeing on an island...
