Cloudy and overcast this morning -  a rarity on this holiday...

After breakfast, we drove to Berchtesgaden and slightly beyond - to the Salzbergwerk...

Here, vast deposits of salt have been mined for almost 500 years...

We were off underground on a small train and were kitted out accordingly...

We were disappointed they've done away with the need for hats...

Whilst some of the noteworthy items have been here for decades, or even centuries...

...much of what we saw was more high tech than anything even 10 years ago, never mind during my first visit here almost 40 years back...

The walls remain much the same...

They have introduced a large interactive scientific exhibition too...

Probably the most spectacular item is the "Mirror Lake" which we sailed across in a small boat - these pictures don't really do it justice but, suffice to say, its surface is indeed as reflective as a mirror...

We had to go down a couple of long steep chutes to access various parts of the mine - this was rather unsettling but we made it through...

The train took us back to the surface...

..and out...

Great stuff...

We did not venture into Berchtesgaden...

Instead we nipped back over to Austria to fill the car with petrol - in Germany, petrol was around 20 cents a litre dearer...

We are Scottish...

Shopping for Mozart Balls for my mum here...

...before heading to the Hellbrun Palace for a look round in the just starting drizzle...

This the very gazebo used in the "I am sixteen going on seventeen" segment of "The Sound of Music" all you Julie Andrews fans...

As we drove back towards Salzburg, this mountain impressed...

Passing Hallien we again saw the weird peaks...

Driving back through Berchtesgaden and on to Bad Reichenhall (to where the salt is pumped from Berchtesgaden) we spied the mountain range which looks like a sleeping witch...

As we arrived, the weather picked up...

It was time for lunch - Anne enjoyed a couple of Wieners but couldn't help sniggering...

... at the upside down bum-like qualities of my Weisses...

We'd been here before on previous trips but it seemed much more attractive this time round...

Despite the presence of cake...

...we managed to keep temptation at bay this once...

On our way back to the car, I spied a wee record shop down this alley...

...and partook of the final CD of the trip...

...later seen on Amazon for 100 Euros rather than the 4 I paid...

Home as the clouds returned...

...and packing...

..before enjoying the balcony...

Down to the town for our last evening meal in Konigssee...

...noting the witchy mountains again...

Down to the lake...

...past the now closed beer garden...

...over the bridge to the other side...

...for a meal at the Echostuberl by the bobsleigh run...

Tasty Goulaschsuppe...

...under the watchful eye of St Bartholoma...

...followed by more typical pork based German fayre...

Out into the gathering gloom...

A quick shifty around the bobsleigh run...

Then, as the mountains darkened...

Home...

Lights out...

Highlight of the Day : Down the salt mine...
