Machine messiahs...

Yes - Edinburgh Setlist

To FOPP today for the first time this week...

Picked up the latest album from British jazz combo Polar Bear, and very fine it is too...

Listened as I made my way back into town for tonight's Yes concert at the Usher Hall...

No Jon Anderson vocalising, instead, a French Canadian (Benoit David) whom Chris Squire discovered singing with a Yes tribute band...

On keyboards, Oliver Wakeman, son of Rick...

Both accounted for themselves very well indeed...

Chris Squire and Alan White walked on looking like they'd been transported from an Old Folks' Home but their playing belied their ages...

Steve Howe on guitar played like a man possessed...

An interesing first half included songs from "Time and A Word", "Tormato" and "Drama" that I'd never heard any formation of the band play live before...

The one low point was "Owner of a Lonely Heart" which, despite being the band's "big hit single" seemed very out of place in a set which never ventured closer to the present than "Owner"'s 1983 release date...

The final quintet of "South Side of the Sky", "Machine Messiah" (another debut for me), "Heart of the Sunrise", "Roundabout" and "Starship Trooper" truly rocked...

They started bang on 7:30 and played for 150 minutes - so I was back in the house by 10:20 having been excellently entertained...

Another hilarious "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "This Week" also entertained, before I headed for bed with tonight's setlist on the cans (and Brahms)...

Highlight of the Day : Southside of the Sky - oh yes...
