I am not Jean Clair...

Playlist
Various - Holiday Acquisitions

Last full day in Lille and we knew in advance the weather would break...

Right enough, overcast as we looked out this morning...

Out post the usual croissants and coffee breakfast...

...and to the Palais des Beaux Arts to avoid the oncoming rain - and to enjoy some culture...

An impressive building...

Our first stop, an exhibition of works by Breugel and family (with various different spellings of the name)...

...including works by a Japanese artist, influenced by the master...

An animated film based around Breugel's drawings of the seven deadly sins kept us amused for 20 minutes...

We admired this huge painting by Wicar...

...before heading down into the basement to enjoy an exhibition of drawings by the masters collected by said Wicar during his time as an art dealer in Italy...

Of the myriad crawings on display, this, for me, was the most true to life...

We took a look around the other artefacts, some going back to ancient times...

...such as this cat's casket...

...and a mummified kitten...

...both from ancient Egypt...

A collection of coins was admired..

...while one of the most interesting areas was a selection of 3D maps from the 1600 and 1700's of various towns in Northern France and neighbouring Belgium...

A break for coffee and the inevitable cake...

...followed by a visit to the shop...

I particularly admired these models based on Breugel's seven deadly sins cartoons...

Something very Monty Pythonesque about them...

Anne reckoned she'd found a book about me...

Cheeky monkey...

Foregoing my autobiography, i purchased a Delacroix illustrated copy of Goethe's "Faust" in French - which, like the St Exupery and Cocteau bought earlier in the week, will no doubt languish on a shelf unread until ending their days in a skip...

back into the main body of the collection and others were being entranced by the Breugel film...

We found a few examples of more modern art...

...before making our way upstairs to see the masters - and we're not talking golf...

An entire floor of beautiful old paintings...

Below, my favourite of the day...

Some absolutely huge canvasses were on display...

..along with some smaller ones...

Turner...

Lautrec...

...and back to the main hall again and out into the rain...

After much tramping about getting soaked, we took refuge in Cafe L'Imaginaire...

..before walking a little more through the cold wind and incessant rain to one last exhibition...

The subject was the end of the world...

this re last year's obsession with the 21 December...

Happy New War...

More cake was required to cheer us up...

...before the very long walk home...

Dried off and with the weather having calmed down, we ventured out in the early evening and chose to visit the cat in the Clock for a second time...

...and here is said cat...

My starter, I think, was tripe in a mustard sauce...

While tasty, thinking about what I was eating made me a little squeamish...

However, by the time the puddings arrived, all such thoughts had been banished...

We had read there was a free festival this evening at the Gare Saint Sauveur, just along from our apartment, so, post dinner, we made our way along...

...past the devil baby and in...

...to find none other than Klink Clock rocking the house...

...so we got to see them after all...

Naturally, your correspondent purchased their CD and indeed had it signed by drummer/chanteuse, Nini...

Between acts, an all girl Samba band took to the floor and were very impressive indeed - which is not entirely illustrated by this, the on epic i managed to capture...

Then Rock'n'Roll band, Las Vargas took to the stage...

If I closed my eyes, I could have sworn i was attending a Nina Hagen concert...

Great stuff...

With an early start back to the UK tomorrow, we made our way home, past the devil baby again, a good night having been had...

Highlight of the Day : Artworks and music...and food...
