Up around seven and to the kitchen as is now the norm, first to write up yesterday’s events and then to continue the Blue note reading, whilst waiting for Anne to surface...

Shaved for breakfast, which, today, we had out, walking into the old town main square to "Bagels & Coffee" - a very tasty American Bagel and creamy hot chocolate for your weight watching correspondent...

Wandered down to the river and into the Slovakian National Gallery of Art, the contents of which we enjoyed for a good couple of hours...

Exhibitions on Russian Icons first – a wee bit too much religion perhaps – and then a retrospective exhibition of Slavakian Modern Art hero Julius Koller...

The exhibition included pieces from the late 50’s through to 2007, the year of his death at the reasonably early age of 68...

I felt inspired by his work – I wish that inspiration would last beyond the gallery walls...

Two rooms choc full of 20th Century Art were further highlights of our visit, before being transported back to reality with a visit to Tesco and lunch purchases, which included a couple of tasty cakes...

Ash update on the TV at lunchtime – Edinburgh airport closed...

Decided to walk up to the Soviet War Monument which overlooks the city and was erected to commemorate the 6,500 soldiers buried there in both individual and mass graves...

A long and hard climb but affording some good views of the town on the way...

It’s a huge sculpture and, with the weather turning just as we reached it, a sombre spectacle...

We descended the hill on its other side, walked back into town and sat outside a bar (under cover) for a beer, as the rain started to pour with some ferocity...

A quick visit to a rubbish record shop as we trudged home through the downpour...

We read, listened to music and watched telly until, eventually, venturing back out into the rain and round to the Slovak Pub for dinner again...

A couple of lovely chicken dishes tonight and yet more beer...

At one stage I thought I’d ordered some sheeps’ cheese by mistake...

Home again for footie on the TV as the big Vienna derby was played out, with Austria Vienna beating Rapid Vienna 1-0, followed by Spurs beating Man City, also 1-0...

A text from sister-in-law Jane advised a 0-0 draw for Hearts and a 6-6 draw for Hibs (after being 6-2 up – how Anne laughed)...

More importantly, Jane advised the airport was open again...

Fingers crossed...

Off to bed, with thunderstorms throughout the night...

Highlight of the day : Modern art..
