A new week, 16th of the year...

The machines awaited...

Today, spent mostly listening to the music of 2020 as a new year became the spotlight for the next two weeks...

It seems the closer we get to the present when looking at a particular year, the less received wisdom there is re the choices being made and so, the wider the field, as regards what might garner votes....

This, in itself, makes for a healthier musical landscape...

Back in the day, you had to buy the albums. You played them a lot, they became favourites, tied to moments in time. Now you can stream all you want, whether sticking to genre or tasting more widely. So, with more choice, people likely played them less, so favourites are less settled.

My diary for 1983 shows that I bought just 25 LPs that year that were released in 1983. 40 years later, I can "own" almost anything I want as a downloaded file - after 117 days of the year I have over 280 2023 LPs - over eleven 24 hour days of new music...

To prove my first comment above, I analysed the stats for all the years voted on so far...

The average winning votes per decade (excluding years still to be voted on, i.e. 1970, 1986, 2001, 2013 and 2020) are:-

1960s 1205
1970s 1116
1980s 1046
1990s 967
2000s 691
2010s 537
2020s 343

Add to that these observations...

The ten years with the least consensus (i.e. lowest winning LP) 2003, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022

6th, 7th and 8th placed LPs in a year qualify for a "wild card" place in the next round of voting (which will be once the remaining years have been voted on)...

There are no wild card LPs post 1995...

From this, it's clear to me that the majority of voters are of a certain age...

There are 3 stages - the early years - what they've been told are good (e.g. The Beatles)...

The mid years - things they grew up with (e.g. REM, Pixies, Radiohead)...

The later years - anything and everything...

That concludes my thought son things...

Anyway, took down and dusted some box sets...

...and put them back...

Lunch was accompanied by "Designated Survivor"...

I amy have too many sets of headphones...

Anne's painting is nearing completion...

This evening, a surprisingly high 140 on "University Challenge" and we finished Season 1 of "Designated Survivor"...

Enough left open for a good start to Season 2...

Finished the day with a listen to Jon Anderson's performance with the Band of Geeks last Friday - impressive impersonation of Yes, it has to be said...

The BoG have been doing these things for years and now they are on tour with the real vocalist...

Nice...

Highlight of the Day : The music of 2020...
