Day two in Hamburg and a beautiful sunny morning...
...before we set out on what turned out to be around a 90 minute walk into the Old Town...
Just along the road from our apartment was the access into the Aussenalster - the Outer Alster Lake...
This is how Hamburgians sometimes get to work on a Monday morning...
...and on to the Schwannenwik...
At first I wasn't sure if the gull in the pic below was part of the sculpture...
...but it wasn't...
Onward...
...and past the Kempinski Hotel Atlantic...
It costs around £220 a night for a "normal" room...
Udo Lindenberg has stayed in a suite at the hotel for 21 years...
This is not Udo...
On into town, past the Art Gallery we will visit later this week...
...and along by the Inner Alster Lake, with its famous fountain...
Nearly there...
To the Rathaus Marktplatz at last...
We were not yet aware we'd soon be climbing this...
...only to discover it's almost all gone, destroyed in WWII - our research was not up to scratch...
To the Chamber of Commerce...
...with its displays re the Hanseatic League...
...and on...
Inside...
Being suckers for a tower climb, at just three of your European Euros each, we could not resist and so set out on the 544 step stairway to heaven - or, at least, to the top of the spire...
Onwards and upwards....
Rick Wakeman not shown...
As we neared the top, the views were getting better all the time...
Last push...
...and we were there...
We could (almost) see our house from here...
The Exec Producer was slightly less the worse for wear...
..than was your correspondent...
We had taken around 21 minutes to climb the tower...
It took just 8 to make the descent...
...and then, we stumbled across Saturn...
...where my Udo Lindenberg collection was finally completed and an excellent 2CD set of (a) the best of songstress Annette Humpe and (b) covers of her songs by others, was also procured...
Through the Hauptbahnhof...
...past the Deutsches Schauspielhaus (German Playhouse)...
...before heading back to the apartment, stopping off for evening provisions on the way...
Later on, some footie and then this...

Back out and more walking around the centre of town, in the very hot heat...
Lunch at Balzac Coffee...
...and on...
To the previously seen church, the Hauptkirche St Petri...
Inside...
Being suckers for a tower climb, at just three of your European Euros each, we could not resist and so set out on the 544 step stairway to heaven - or, at least, to the top of the spire...
The tower was used as a fire station at one point and this Smart Car was also part of that service - when no longer needed, the engine and other gubbins were removed and it was hauled up to the tower's second floor...
This is the previous "kugel" which sat atop the spire before being replaced...
Onwards and upwards....
Rick Wakeman not shown...
The wooden outer of the spire is a large fire risk - hence...

Germany is great for most things - it's televisional entertainment, however, leaves much to be desired...
Lights out...
