Missing space not really missing...

A walk to Fopp at lunchtime - nothing bought - I had already been in HMV and PC World, swithering in the latter about an iPod Classic with 160GB of storage...

Except it only has 148GB of storage...

In case you were wondering about why it is a 160GB iPod only has 148GBs of space for your music, it's because an actual GB is bigger than 1,000,000,000 bytes - in fact 1,000,000,000 is only around 93% of the true value of a Gigabyte...

Manufacturers use the handy, rounded 1,000,000,000 number to describe the products but when you access the "about" section of the machine, they choose to use the rather less wieldy 1,073,741,824 number...

This means 160GBs at 1,000,000,000 per GB is really only 149 (real) GBs - presumably the other disappearing GB which takes the available capacity down to 148 is for the software in the machine...

Rivetting stuff eh?

Back home, no purchases made, Anne was out with chum Theresa for a tasty meal - your correspondent dined on Tuna (some of which was stolen from the pot by Meg the Black Cat), to which, post cat theft, was added beans and some left over chicken from yesterday...

As you might imagine, this was not the best tea I've ever had...

The rest of the evening was spent recording the podcast which will appear here just after midnight...

...and watching "House of Fools", which continues to make me chuckle - while Anne wonders why I'm chuckling at such unadulterated nonsense...

We agree to disagree...

Lights out...

Highlight of the Day : Rather sadly, it was finding out why there are always fewer gigs in MP3 players than advertised...
