Thursdays are the days for doing something...
But first, coffee...
I listened to a record I saw in Fopp the other day which I bought back in the 70s, Loggins & Messina's "Full Sail"...
It reminds me of the old days but, in the big scheme of things, is not really very good...
Then, I looked up my diary for 1983 and found that, this week in that year, I bought an LP by the band Lakeside...
Listening back to that was a revelation...
So funky - I ended up nabbing their entire discography...
All of this pre breakfast, which was taken down the hill at Cafe Vigo...
Yowsah!
Back to the car...
...and a drive to that Peebles, was soundtracked by recent leaver from the living room shelf, Ben Abraham...
We parked over the river and walked to the main street...
Here, we started a walking tour post a short stop at the tourist office...
We used the Peebles Town Trail Guide - but saw the last thing on the guide first...
The Chambers Institution...
With its impressive and poignant war memorial...
Then, back out onto the main Street to the Mercat Cross...
...which is where our red line ends on the map below...
The trail began on the North Side of the main street...
For full details, see the link above to the PDF leaflet, which guided us today for around 2.5 hours, as we enjoyed sites of Peebles we'd never seen before, along with background information on sites we'd often seen before, which we did not know before...
24-28 High Street...
..and a courtyard therein...
...erm and some pipes...
St Michael's Wynd, with a sun dial above it...
..and ornate roof...
Down to the Cuddy...
...and along to the Cuddy Bridge...
...and up the stairs...
On the corner of Main St, The Bank House...
...the Parish Church...
...the Sherriff Court...
...and the former Caledonian Railway Hotel...
Over to the Tweed Bridge...
...and down by the river...
Under the bridge, you could see how it's been widened over the centuries...
Past the rather more modern swimming pool...
...to the point where the Cuddy runs into the Tweed...
...and, in the distance, the Fotheringham Bridge...
Up the Old Town Vennel...
...to the Lodgings of the Abbot of Arbroath...
...and on, past the hospital, to the ruins of St Andrew's Kirk and its cemetery...
...before a long walk East...
...past a cat on a hot tin roof...
...sort of...
To the Cross Kirk, where the bones of St Nicholas (aka Santa Claus) are said to have been found...
Onwards to the Tree Bridge...
...and a further walk up Cuddyside...
...where we met another wee cat...
Over a foot bridge and back down Cuddyside...
...up by the Briggait and on to Station Road, where the North British Railway ran to...
...past the public garden and ornate water pump...
...and round to the only remaining building from the old station - now a car park...
From here, we followed the last surviving part of the town wall...
...past the East Gate, now an arts centre...
...and down past the Old Rectory...
..and the Leekie Memorial Church and its former Manse...
...to Tweed Green, through which we'd entered the town earlier...
...and Cabbage Hall, formerly the Schoolmaster's house...
Looking back across Tweed Green, in the distance is the metal Priorsford Bridge, which we crossed after parking...
Overlooking the green are two school buildings, the Grammar School...
..and the English School...
...and, up School Brae, by which we accessed the Main Street this morning, is the Corn Exchange...
Father along Tweed Green, we turned into the "Stinking Stairs", so called as there was once a brewery and a tanning operation here...
They lead into Parliament Square...
...likely so named to commemorate the union of the English and Scottish parliaments...
And so we were back on the south side of the main street...
We passed the, for some reason unpictured, Tontine and County Hotels and the, pictured, Old Town House...
...bringing us back to our starting point, the Chambers Institution...
Very interesting...
Time for a light lunch at Costa...
...followed by a look round the various ships on the Main Street...
Some CDs were bought, but not these...
Rather, these...
Back to the car...
...and a short drive along to Neidpath Castle...
..and its grounds, which afforded good views...
...including of today's tourists...
These boots were made for walking, it seems...
Back to the car once more...
...and the drove home, this time via an alternative route and we popped into sister Sheila's in Penicuik...
...where Maisie was having fun with an elephant...
Home around 6 and ripping and listening...
...followed by a light tea and this week's "Leverage", "Taskmaster" live and two more of "Survival of the Thickest" and some more listening, before bed...
Grime-tastic, kind of...
Highlight of the Day : Peebles...
